A Yucky and Magical New Year!

Happy New Year, everybody!

It's been awhile since I've updated, and I have a ton of news to share.

Yucky Science
2016 was a very exciting year, especially with the release of the Things That Make You Go Yuck books I co-authored with my buddy Charlie Hatton.  In December, we learned that all four books made the National Science Teachers Association's NSTA Recommends list, the Mystifying Mutants book received a great review from Seattle Book Review, Crooked Critters had a nice review in Book Reporter, and a science-loving kid really loved our Lego joke in Extreme Living.

In fall 2017, we will be releasing a new science book with the same publisher. Details coming soon!

Our webseries Magicland got into 18 festivals, and we still have submissions out there. Production of Season 2 begins early in 2017 with an expected release of Fall 2017. More news will be posted on the Magicland site and our production company's website Drinkstorm Studios.

Charlie and I had a chance to travel in 2016 to see some of our stage plays produced. In August, we went to beautiful Halifax, Nova Scotia to see our fairytale comedy, The Marriedest One of All,  and we went twice to NYC to see Johnny Culver and his team perform our spooky script Edward's Closet!  In May, we'll be heading to Rochester, NY to see Everyone's Theater Company perform our script Odd Scouts Out!

That's it for me! Hope you all have a happy, healthy, and fruitful 2017.

Books, and Miami, and Mavericks, Oh My!

It's been months since my last update, and I have a bunch of news to share. So let's get to it, already.

Things that Make You Go Yuck!
My pal Charlie Hatton and I have just released a fun and funny series for science-loving kiddos called Things That Make You Go Yuck!   You can buy them at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and many bookstores and online retailers worldwide!

Our comedy webseries Magicland has made it into 15 festivals so far and counting! It is currently nominated for Best Mockumentary in the Miami Webfest and four awards at the Maverick Movie Awards (Best Directing, Best Lead Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Special Merit for our Website).

Last month, Charlie and I had an amazing trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia to see a production of our play The Marriedest One of All performed by the Taboo Theatre. They did an absolutely incredible job!

On Halloween weekend, we will be heading to NYC to see our spooky play Edward's Closet performed by the Midtown International Theater Festival! This play was performed in April for the Take Ten Festival. Director Johnny Culver is back for this performance, as well as many former cast members. (And a few new "spooks"!)

Science, Sno-cones, and Smoke

Hello everyone!

I hope your 2016 has been fruitful so far! It has been for me, so I have a few updates on some really fun projects.

I'm happy to announce that my writing partner Charlie and I are under contract with a well-known educational book company to write a "for fun" science book series for middle-schoolers. The series releases on Oct 1, and it will be a total of four books. More on that in the coming months.

Our goofy webseries Magicland has been making the rounds to film festivals far and wide. Magicland follows the crazy carnies of a mom-and-pop theme park in East Toledo. It recently won  Best Webseries of the Month at The Online Film Festival (TOFF), and it won second place at the 12-Month Film Festival in Romania. (ROMANIA!)

It's currently in the middle of its run at the Direct Monthly Online Film Festival (DMOFF) You can vote for it right here through the end of the month.

Four years ago, my friend Lizzy Miles had an intriguing idea for a book. She wanted to compile true stories about cigarette smoking written by everyone from lifelong smokers to militant never-smokers. She put these "unfiltered stories" together in a book called The Smoking Section: Memories of America's Most Hated Vice.  I am one of the non-smoker contributors, and I have two tales in it. The book is currently on sale. If you have Kindle Unlimited, you can read the book for free!

I received my contributor package today, and Lizzy gave the writers a little bonus -- candy cigarettes and gum!  (I received double of everything, because I contributed two essays. It pays to be prolific, kids!)  You can give the book a like on Facebook and a follow on Twitter.

Hats TOFF to Magicland!

Hey kids! If you ever wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes of your favorite theme park, well -- I can't help you.  But I can tell you what goes on behind the scenes of Magicland, East Toledo's ninth-favorite theme park, because I'm filming a webseries about it.  And you can vote for the pilot episode in The Online Film Festival right now.  It takes two seconds -- less time that it takes to pluck a plastic duck out of the duck pond.

This week I'm working on a documentary about carousels, so I'm going to share one of my favorite Magicland episodes: Merry-go-Wrong. If you like what you see, drop  by Magicland's website for more episodes!

Magicland in the Boston Comedy Festival!

As many of you know, I've been working on a comedy webseries Magicland, which is set behind-the-scenes of a family-owned theme park.  We just found out that our sizzle reel will be screening at the Boston Comedy Festival this weekend!  Sunday at 2 p.m at Davis Square Theater.
It  will also be screening at the SCATV Rough Cuts Media Screening on November 19!

Science, Scripts, and Snickers.

Hi folks!

I am overdue for a proper update, so I thought I'd give a quick update of what's going on in my world.
For the last few months, I have been doing some course development for middle school students for the Next Generation Science Standards, which is incredibly fun and rewarding work.  Fellow science writers, have you seen the National Science Teachers Association's site about the NGSS yet?  A great resource to get you up to speed quickly on what they are, why they were made, and how to address them in your curriculum writing.

I got some great news on two of my comedy TV pilots this week. Magicland, a comedy pilot I wrote with Charlie Hatton is a semi-finalist in the Industry Insider's TV Pilot competition. And this evening I just learned that my comedy pilot Thicker Than Water is a top 50 quater-finalist in the Tracking Board's LaunchPad Pilot competition. I'll keep you posted on their progress.

Kyle and I have released the next book in the Woe series, Mug of Woe 2! Mosey on over to Amazon to laugh at these writers' embarrassing tales. Kindle edition will be up soon.

Also, a few weeks ago, Charlie and I had one of our ten-minute comedy  plays performed in the Fractured Fairytales Festival at  Theatre@First in Somerville, MA. We fractured Hansel and Gretel and tossed them in the Boston Commons with a wicked awesome witch. This is what happened.
